MOSCOW, December 26 (Itar-Tass) — Police detained a tax inspector in central Moscow on suspicion of taking a 6-million-rouble bribe for stopping a check of a commercial firm, spokeswoman for the city police department for economic security and combating corruption /UEBiPK/ Irina Volk told Itar-Tass on Wednesday.
"The suspect was caught red-handed as he was taking the money," Volk said.
The spokeswoman said the sting was prepared after a Moscow firm director had reported extortion by a Federal Tax Service inspector. He demanded six million roubles for stopping the check and reducing tax claims against the company. The director's information was confirmed, and detectives prepared an operation.
"The meeting between the director and the tax inspector took place in a central Moscow cafe. Detectives of the central Moscow department for combating economic crimes, together with Interior Ministry's internal security personnel, detained the suspect as the sum was being passed to him. The bribe taker is deputy head of the department for visiting inspections # 2 of Moscow inspectorate N 24," Volk said.
Police are checking the tax inspector for involvement in similar crimes.
