NALCHIK, December 25 (Itar-Tass) — Kabardino-Balkaria leader Arsen Kanokov held an emergency conference with law-enforcement officials to discuss the crime situation in the republic, following the murder of an academy rector, Kanokov's press service told Itar-Tass.
"We cannot put up with it. First they kill a young journalist, and now a university rector. The vigorous persons who were willing to work and bring good to the republic have died. A man was killed in broad daylight in his office. I demand that the persons guilty of this brutal crime be quickly found and punished," Kanokov stated.
He ordered the law-enforcement bodies to "adequately resist" the criminals and reminded that he would personally monitor the probe and will be waiting for the soonest results.
"The SK investigative bodies in Kabardino-Balkaria opened a criminal case over murder of rector of Kabardino-Balkaria's State Academy of Agriculture Boris Zherukov and illegal turnover of weapons," Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Tass earlier.
Two unidentified persons walked into his office at around 10:50, Moscow time, and fired shots at him. Zherukov died of his wounds on the spot, an official at the regional department of the Investigative Committee reported.
Zherukov, 58, has led the United Russia faction at the republic's parliament. He was dean of the agronomy department since 1993, chairman of a Thesis Board, and pro-rector for economic work and external relations before his appointment as president of Kabardino-Balkaria's state academy of agriculture. He is merited scientist of Russia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
Secretary of Untied Russia's General Council, deputy speaker of the State Duma lower house of the Russian parliament Sergei Neverov said the Interior Minister should personally supervise the probe.
"The persons guilty of the brutal murder of United Russia’s General Council member, rector of the Kabardino-Balkaria Academy of Agriculture must be found within the shortest possible time and suffer the harshest punishment, "Neverov said, "we ask Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev to personally monitor the probe into the crime committed in Nalchik on Tuesday."
Neverov also conveyed his condolences to the victim's relatives, friends and colleagues.
