Kabardino-Balkaria investigators open criminal case over murder of academy rector

Zherukov, 58, has led the United Russia faction at the republic's parliament

MOSCOW, December 25 (Itar-Tass) — Kabardino-Balkaria's investigators opened a criminal case over the murder in Nalchik of rector of State Academy of Agriculture /KBGSKhA/ Boris Zherukov, Investigative Committee spokesman Vladimir Markin told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.

"The SK investigative bodies in Kabardino-Balkaria opened a criminal case over murder and illegal turnover of weapons. An inspection of the scene of crime is underway and other urgent measures are being taken," Markin said.

Earlier reports said police in Kabardino-Balkaria had launched an operation to catch two killers of the rector of Kabardino-Balkaria's State Academy of Agriculture Boris Zherukov. He was shot and killed in his office in Nalchik earlier in the day.

Two unidentified persons entered his office at around 10:50, Moscow time, and fired shots at him. Zherukov died of his wounds on the spot, an official at the regional department of the Investigative Committee reported.

Zherukov, 58, has led the United Russia faction at the republic's parliament. He was dean of the agronomy department since 1993, chairman of a Thesis Board, and pro-rector for economic work and external relations before his appointment as president of Kabardino-Balkaria's state academy of agriculture.

Secretary of Untied Russia's General Council, deputy speaker of the State Duma lower house of the Russian parliament Sergei Neverov said the Interior Minister should personally supervise the probe.

"The persons guilty of the brutal murder of United Russia’s General Council member, rector of the Kabardino-Balkaria Academy of Agriculture must be found within the shortest possible time and suffer the harshest punishment, "Neverov said, "we ask Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev to personally monitor the probe into the crime committed in Nalchik on Tuesday."

Neverov also conveyed his condolences to the victim's relatives, friends and colleagues.
