TBILISI, December 24 (Itar-Tass) — Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili said on Monday that he was not going to run for president.

He said at a news conference in Tbilisi that he is “not going to be president, all the more as after the new election (due in October 2013) the functions of the new president will be more limited than nowadays in accordance with the Constitution”.

“I am not a typical politician who plans carrier changes. I am not going to stay in politics for a long time. I have already stated that earlier,” Ivanishvili said, adding that he “will be there where the Fatherland needs” him.

Ivanishvili has repeatedly stated that he was “planning to withdraw from politics in the spring of 2014 – after elections to local governments”. However, he intends “to remain an active member of the civil society and together with the civil sector control the branch of power” he has quit.

At the same time, on November 22 the prime minister told reporters that he could “reconsider his decision to resign from politics in the spring of 2014”. He said then that he would leave if everything was o’kay in the country.

According to Ivanishvili, “it will be possible to speak about that in concrete terms in a year-and-a-half,” after summing up the results of activity of the government he leads.
