New directions of SCO efforts to be in the spotlight at SPIEF 2018

Panel session on the prospects of promoting the SCO future business agenda will take place on the first day of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Participants of the event will discuss potential common points between business and the state, including the role of the SCO Business Council in the SCO Working Groups activities, the involvement of observer states representatives in the SCO business programme, as well as the joint business agenda.

The session will focus on a few important issues such as ways to remove trade barriers, enhance industrial and technological cooperation particularly through establishing new production chains and getting international financial institutions involved in projects across the SCO domain.

Sergei Katyrin, President of The Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry will moderate the session.

“The main objectives of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization include strengthening trust, good-neighbourly relations among member states, and promoting their cooperation in politics and economy. It is necessary to continue strengthening the credibility and role of the SCO in the world economy. Therefore, we kindly invite our colleagues and partners in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization to take part in SPIEF 2018, a key business event in St. Petersburg,” said Anton Kobyakov, Adviser to the President of the Russian Federation.

Cooperation in the SCO agenda is one of the priorities of Russia’s foreign policy. During their meeting on 1 December 2017 in Sochi, heads of the SCO States Council made a decision to strengthen the role of the SCO Business Council in the SCO trade and economic agenda. To this end, amplifying cooperation between the SCO states business communities, as well as incorporating business in the interstate dialogue on the development of trade and economic cooperation within the SCO domain requires a detailed discussion.

To recap, in 2020 Chelyabinsk will host Heads of the SCO States Council meeting and BRICS summit, in accordance with the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of 15 March 2018.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an international organization, which unites Russia, India, Kazakhstan, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Currently Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia are the observer states of the SCO.
