Russian Foreign Ministry describes US’ new national security strategy as confrontational

Productive partnership between Moscow and Washington is possible only on the principles of equality and mutual respect, the Foreign Ministry said

MOSCOW, December 19. /TASS/. The United States’ new national security strategy is openly confrontational, being geared not towards constructive cooperation but towards confrontation, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

That is why, according to the ministry, the text is full with "anti-Russian passages." "Russia’s, as well as China’s, economic and military buildup is presented as a challenge to the United States. In other words, Washington apparently doesn’t want to see our countries as strong power, being afraid of total loss of its positions," the ministry said. "That is why we are being accused of infringing upon ‘world order,’ which is obviously interpreted as a unipolar world reduced to America’s interests and needs only."

The ministry pointed to the fact that the document acknowledged the central role of power in global affairs. "This is what guides the US’ policy on the global scale. The new strategy has changed nothing but only openly named the US’ goals and reflected Washington’s growing lack of confidence in its positions," the ministry said.

"On our part, we reiterate that we are ready to build partner relations with the United States. But there should be no room in such relations to attempts at dictation or interference into our domestic affairs. Really productive partnership is possible only on the principles of equality and mutual respect," the Russian foreign ministry stressed.

The United States made public its new National Security Strategy on Monday. Russia was mentioned several times in the text. Thus, it said that "the combination of Russian ambition and growing military capabilities creates an unstable frontier in Eurasia," with growing risks of conflicts due to alleged "Russian miscalculation." It also said that China and Russia "challenge American power, infl uence, and interests, attempting to erode American security and prosperity.".
