US goes against global community's will in regard to Palestine-Israel conflict — ministry

The United States demonstrates an approach that erodes the legal basis of the settlement process, the Russian Foreign Ministry said

MOSCOW, December 19. /TASS/. Russia regrets that the US has gone against the will of the global community in regard to the Palestine-Israel settlement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

"It is regrettable that the United States, which is one of the permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and claims to be the key mediator in the Palestine-Israel conflict, has once again demonstrated an approach that is against the will of the global community and erodes the legal basis of the settlement process," the statement reads.

On Monday, the United States vetoed the United Nations Security Council resolution aimed at reversing US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Except the US, all the other 14 member states of the UN Security Council supported the document. The draft resolution stresses that "any decisions and actions which purport to have altered the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council." The document does not mention the United States but says that the UN "deeply regrets recent decisions regarding the status of Jerusalem." The draft resolution also calls on countries to refrain from recognizing actions and measures, which contradict the UN Security Council resolutions, as well as from setting up diplomatic missions in Jerusalem.

On December 6, US President Donald Trump said that "it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel." He added that his administration would begin a process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
