Russian senator praises Syrian operation against IS

On December 6, Vladimir Putin announced the total defeat of the Islamic State terror group on both banks of the Euphrates River

MOSCOW, December 11. /TASS/. It is hard to overestimate the success of the joint Russian-Syrian operation to eradicate the main forces of the Islamic State terror group (IS, outlawed in Russia), Chairman of the Russian Federation Council (upper house of parliament) Committee for Foreign Affairs Konstantin Kosachev said on Monday. According to him, "a showcase victory over the first terrorist quasi-state" is in the entire world’s interest.

On December 6, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the total defeat of the Islamic State terror group on both banks of the Euphrates River. He pointed out that there could still be some pockets of resistance but on the whole, terrorists active in that area had been totally defeated. On Monday, Putin visited the Hmeymim air base in Syria and ordered the Russian Defense Ministry to begin the withdrawal of troops from the county.

"The decision that the Commander-in-Chief announced at the Hmeymin air base today is very important not only for this country [Syria] and the Middle East. The entire world is interested in a showcase victory over the first terrorist quasi-state on the planet, which had acquired land in a short period of time, formed an army and developed and economy and ideas. This is why the successful completion of the joint Russian-Syrian military operation to eradicate the main IS forces is hard to overestimate," Kosachev wrote on Facebook.
