Lavrov and Tillerson reiterate importance of further contacts on Afghanistan

The Russian top diplomat also expressed concern over Washington’s new strategy on the Afghan crisis

VIENNA, December 7. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who had a meeting on the sidelines of the OSCE Ministerial Council meeting in Vienna on Thursday, reiterated that it is important to continue contacts on Afghanistan.

"We reiterated the usefulness of contacts on Afghanistan between our representatives," Lavrov said after the meeting. "We had contacts in September and in December… Of course, we need to know what each of us wants."

The Russian top diplomat also expressed concern over Washington’s new strategy on the Afghan crisis, which, as a matter of fact, envisages its resolution by means of force. "It is an unrealistic approach," he stressed.

"We agreed that our representatives will continue contacts, coordinate their approaches and, of course, cooperate with other countries involved in the Afghan settlement," Lavrov added.
