Moscow condemns act of vandalism against monument to Soviet commander in Prague

The act of vandalism against the monument to Marshal Konev took place in Prague on November 23

MOSCOW, November 24. /TASS/. Moscow is appalled by the act of vandalism against the monument to Marshal Konev, which took place in the Czech capital of Prague on November 23, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"We are appalled by the act of vandalism against the monument to Marshal Ivan Konev, which took place in Prague on November 23," the statement reads. "The act insults not only the memory of the Soviet military commander who led the First Ukrainian Front forces liberating the capital of Czechoslovakia in May 1945, but also the memory of all those killed while fighting against fascism," the Russian Foreign Ministry added.

The ministry was confident that "a vast majority of the Czech Republic’s citizens share" those feelings.

"We hope that the Czech authorities will conduct a timely investigation and take decisive measures to prevent such incidents in the future, while those responsible will receive the punishment they deserve," the statement added.
