Duma supports deputy foreign minister for permanent representative in Geneva

The State Duma approved Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov for permanent representative to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva

MOSCOW, November 23./TASS/. The State Duma’s Committee for International Affairs has approved Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov for permanent representative to the UN Office and other International Organizations in Geneva, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Pankin told reporters after a session of the committee.

"Yes, everything went well," he said replying to questions. At the moment, the post is occupied by Alexey Borodavkin.

Under the Russian Constitution and regulations of the lower house, the Duma Committee for International Affairs "participates in consultations in the appointment and recall by the Russian president of diplomatic envoys to foreign states and international organizations". The candidacies are submitted by the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"At its session in the presence of the candidate for the appointment of recall, as well as respective officials of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the committee holds discussion and passes its motivated decision. The decision officially goes to the Russian president," says Article 212 of the Duma regulations.

Russian ambassadors are appointed in a decree by the head of state.
