Head of Russia’s Republic of Karelia announces early resignation

Alexander Khudilainen was appointed head of the Republic of Karelia in May 2012

PETROZAVODSK, February 15. /TASS/. Head of northwestern Russia’s Republic of Karelia Alexander Khudilainen has announced his early resignation on Wednesday.

"I have submitted my early resignation to the President of Russia Vladimir Putin," he told reporters. "You know that a rotation process is currently underway on the regional and federal levels, so I have decided not to run the elections due in 207 days. The president’s candidate needs time to prove himself worthy of this position and come up with a development program," Khudilainen added.

"No matter what new position the president offers me, no matter what task he sets before me, I will always remember Karelia and continue to assist its development," he added.

Alexander Khudilainen was appointed head of the Republic of Karelia in May 2012 after previous regional head Andrei Nelidov had resigned. Khudilainen’s term was to expire on May 24, 2017.
