Governor of Russia’s Ryazan region announces early resignation

Head of Russia’s Ryazan region Oleg Kovalyov, who has been serving as governor since 2008, has announced his early resignation

RYAZAN, February 14. /TASS/. Head of Russia’s Ryazan region Oleg Kovalyov, who has been serving as governor since 2008, has announced his early resignation.

"I have worked in the Ryazan region for almost nine years. The gubernatorial election is scheduled to be held in September… I have made a decision not to run for the next term," Kovalyov said at a meeting of the regional government.

"I believe I have accomplished the task President Putin set before me. The region has been developing, it has huge potential. Society trusts the authorities - elections held in the recent years prove this," Kovalyov added noting that he had submitted his resignation to the president a little more than a week ago.

"Since I am one of the most elderly governors in the country, I think it will be right to step down so that the region could have a new head," Kovalyov stressed.
