Proposals on Kuril Islands to be submitted to Putin in January

Deputy Prime Minister Yury Trutnev and First Vice-Premier Igor Shuvalov are in charge of the issue of Russian-Japanese cooperation on the Kuril Islands

MOSCOW, December 20. /TASS/. The proposals on mechanisms of joint economic activity of Russia and Japan on the Kuril Islands will be submitted to the Russian President Vladimir Putin in early January, 2017, Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev told TASS Tuesday.

"This won’t take much time. We have an idea regarding what may be suggested. We’ll be able to submit those proposals to President already in early January," he said.

"It looks like Igor Shuvalov and I will be in charge (of the issue of cooperation on the Kuril Islands - TASS), develop proposals, which will be considered by President," Trutnev added.

Meanwhile, he said, the issue is not about particular economic projects at this stage, but about the cooperation scheme in general. "It is necessary for the leaders of the two countries to take decisions about the cooperation scheme. We make particular proposals, whereas the leaders are to take a final decision, first of all the Russian President since this is the Russian territory," he said.
