Russian senior MP hopes Tillerson to lend 'sound pragmatism' to US foreign policy

"Tillerson is a successful businessman and a pragmatic," the Russian Federation Council speaker says

MOSCOW, December 14. /TASS/. Russian Federation Council speaker Valentina Matviyenko has voiced the hope that Rex Tillerson, proposed for US Secretary of State may lend sound pragmatism to his country’s foreign policy.

"Tillerson is a successful businessman and a pragmatic. I’d like to believe that he will share these qualities of his with his country’s foreign policy," Matviyenko told the media, adding that Russia had said more than once it would be prepared to cooperate with any future US Administration.

In her opinion "any statesman will seek to safeguard the national interests of his own country."

"It remains to be seen what priorities a future US Administration will identify in its foreign and home policies," Matviyenko said.

US President-elect Donald Trump is going to ask the Senate to approve Rex Tillerson, the head of the energy giant ExxonMobil, as US Secretary of State.

Many in the West see Tillerson as an advocate of positive relations with Russia. In 2012 he was awarded Russia’s Order of Friendship.
