LIMA, November 19. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin may meet up with outgoing US President Barack Obama "on the move" on the sidelines of the APEC summit in Lima, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Saturday.
"There have no prior arrangements," Peskov said. "However, as it happens most often, they meet up at summits. Today, they might meet up during dinner in the evening. It means tonight is a first opportunity for them to meet. If it does not happen, actually, tomorrow they are attending the same event for the whole day."
Earlier in the day, Putin arrived in Lima, Peru’s capital, to attend a summit of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) scheduled for November 19-20. The presidential airliner landed at Lima’s airport in Callao.
Along with meetings and talks scheduled within the 2016 APEC Economic Leaders' Week, on November 19 Putin is expected to hold talks with the leaders of China, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines and Peru on the sidelines of the summit.
APEC is an international forum bringing together 21 leading economies of the world for cooperation on trade and economic development of the region. Creating the system of free and open trade and a liberal investment regime in the Asia-Pacific region has been declared the main task for APEC until the year 2020.
Russia and the US also take part in APEC’s activity. Russian officials, participating in APEC summits, use this opportunity to meet not only for general discussion, but to also meet with counterparts from other countries.
