Border control to be lifted in some areas of Sakhalin - Deputy PM Rogozin

Rogozin added that a draft decree has been prepared, adding that it will be officialized within a month

YUZHNO-SAKHALINSK, August 31. /TASS/. It was decided to lift the border-area regime in a number of areas on Sakhalin Island, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has told TASS following a meeting of the State Border Commission.

"I believe the frontier zone of the Sakhalin region is a very important issue. We discussed it with the governor some time ago. Sakhalin is a unique place, not only in terms of nature but also in terms of Russia’s economic life," Rogozin said. "It is necessary to develop tourism here, it is necessary to develop specialized industries and businesses. In my opinion, we have been able to find not only the balance of interests but also of understanding with the border agencies and the FSB (Federal Security Service)."

Rogozin added that a draft decree has been prepared, adding that it will be officialized within a month. "The State Border Commission supported the border guard service’s approach, which met the Sakhalin region administration halfway," he said. Rogozin noted that people should immediately feel the absence of unnecessary restrictions.
