Russian, Australian interior ministers discuss anti-terrorism efforts

The Russian side stressed the necessity of boosting international cooperation

MOSCOW, July 27. /TASS/. Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Kolokoltsev and Commissioner of the Australian Federal Police Andrew Colvin have discussed issues of cooperation between police forces of two countries in the fight against terrorism and cybercrime, the press service of the Russian Interior Ministry told TASS on Wednesday.

Kolokoltsev noted at the meeting that, despite considerable differences in legal systems of Russia and Australia, police forces of both countries have similar tasks in securing law and order, fighting against transnational crime, drug trafficking, terrorism and extremism.

The press service noted that special attention was paid to cooperation in the fight against terrorism. The Russian side stressed that in this issue, the Interior Ministry proceeds from the necessity of boosting the practical component of international cooperation, including exchanging experience and operational information. "We are interested in receiving any information about terrorists’ actions and movements, which would help to detain them and bring them to justice," Kolokoltsev said.

Another topic for discussion was countering crimes in the sphere of hi tech. "This sphere of criminal activity has acquired organized transnational nature. At the same time, cybercrimes have become an indispensable part of terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking and other dangerous types of international crime," the minister said. The Russian Interior Ministry supports developing all forms of inter-state cooperation in the sphere of countering cybercrimes and is ready for constructive cooperation, he added.
