Lavrov welcomes Lisbon’s hopes for full-fledged dialogue with Russia

Russian foreign minister underlines that relationship between Portugal and Russia has deep historical roots

MOSCOW, July 18. /TASS/. Moscow is ready for political dialogue with Lisbon at all levels, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Monday.

"We value our relations that have deep historical roots," Lavrov said at talks with his Portuguese counterpart Augusto Santos Silva. "Until recently, our relations were marked by sustainable stability. After a lengthy pause, we welcome the intention of the new Portuguese government to resume full-fledged cooperation," he added.

He reminded that a session of the inter-governmental commission on trade and economic cooperation was held in June noting that it focused on overcoming negative tendencies in trade turnover. "We hope that this will be fulfilled," Lavrov said.

"We are ready for political dialogue at all levels, for encouraging inter-parliamentary contacts that started to develop and for cooperation between foreign ministries," he noted.

"We hope to discuss the situation in the world, in Europe, the task of fighting against terrorism, which is an absolute priority, as well as our cooperation in international organizations," Lavrov concluded.
