MOSCOW, July 8. /TASS/. Deployment of US missile defense system in South Korea may escalate tensions in the region and create difficulties for resolving problems on Korean Peninsula, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Friday.
"Such actions, no matter how they are explained, very negatively affect global strategic security, adherence to which is so often discussed by Washington. They may also result in escalation of tensions in the region, new difficulties for resolving acute problems of the Korean Peninsula, including the task of its denuclearization," the foreign ministry said.
The ministry stressed that Moscow warned from the very start about dangerous consequences which will follow inevitably if the decision is made to deploy US missile defense system in South Korea. "With support of their allies, the United States continues to build up the potential of the Asia-Pacific segment of the global missile defense system, which leads to disrupting existing strategic balance both in the Asia-Pacific and beyond," the ministry noted.
The foreign ministry expressed hope that "considering the complicated balance of powers in this region, our partners will once again weigh all circumstances and prevent any unreasoned actions which may lead to tragic and irreversible consequences for the situation both in North East Asia and beyond."
South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said earlier today that Seoul and Washington agreed to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) in South Korea.
