Russian diplomat insists Syrian opposition, terrorists must be disengaged

The work towards maintaining the regime of cessation of hostilities in the framework of Russian-US contacts continues

ARTEK (Yalta), July 7. /TASS/. Efforts on ensuring geographical disengagement between opposition forces ready to observe ceasefire and terrorists are a necessary condition for destroying the hotbed of international terrorism in Syria, Russian Foreign Ministry’s official spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a briefing on Thursday.

"The end of the holy month of Radaman for Muslims and the start of the Eid al-Fitr holiday, unfortunately, did not lead to reducing violence in Syria," Zakharova noted.

"A necessary condition for the final destruction of the hotbed of international terrorism in Syria are efforts on ensuring geographical disengagement between opposition forces ready to observe the regime of cessation of hostilities and terrorist groups pf Jebhat al-Nusra (banned in Russia), as well as closing channels of supplying weapons and finances to terrorist groups," the diplomat noted adding that "this is precisely what is outlined in UN Security Council resolutions."

Zakharova said that "work continues on maintaining the regime of cessation of hostilities, including in the framework of regular Russian-US contacts in the military sphere."

"Apart from this, Russian servicemen make consistent efforts to involve separate illegal armed groups and settlements into the process of local ceasefires. There are 173 of them," she added.

The diplomat reminded that a new government has been formed in Damascus. "Most ministers kept their posts. Among main tasks of the cabinet are ensuring the resolution of acute social-economic problems in Syria in the toughest conditions of fighting against terrorism," she concluded.
