MOSCOW, June 27. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who spoke at a congress of Russia’s ruling United Russia party, called on the party to spare no effort not to lose people’s confidence.
"Today, United Russia is holding its 15th congress. The party is of the same age. Not much for a serious political force," Putin noted. "Ove this time, the party has managed to become the most strength and influential force and it is essential not to lose this trust earned through laborious effort."
He said that the party’s preliminary voting in May proved to be very large-scale involving about ten million people. "It demonstrated United Russia’s commitment to the principles of direct democracy and the party managed to get the first result for the forthcoming election campaign - new strong candidates to the State Duma [lower parliament house]," Putin said.
He called on all those taking part in the elections to value people’s trust and not to speculate on current difficulties.
"I would like to ask all political forces that will take part in the election campaign, all those who will be candidates to members of the State Duma, to regional legislative assemblies, to those who will run for governors or municipal heads to value political and public stability we have been earning in the previous years together," Putin stressed, adding that it is possible to make progress and make the people’s life better only in conditions of national accord.
Most dangerous thing, according to the president, is to speculate on current difficulties. "I don’t mean criticism of the authorities - such criticism is really needed. And naturally it will go on. Elections are the time when criticism is voiced outright and outspoken, and this is good, this is normal. It is useful in the majority of cases. I mean a different thing: I am speaking about lies and falsification of facts, about flagrant betrayal of the country’s interests, about shallow promises that are even worse than betrayal," he said and called to spare no effort to avoid it.
"We know that many in our country have to face hardships. But all pin their hopes on you, they believe that you will be able not only to preserve but to augment the unique and dear for our hearts civilization which is called Russia. Please don’t fall short of their expectations. Don’t let them down," Putin said. "All need a strong and independent, open and prosperous Russia where everyone can realize his or her talent, his or her capabilities, where the government and the nation heed, support and respect each other and public accord, solidarity and the country’s interests are above all differences.".
