Russia worried over fomenting tensions in Venezuela — Foreign Ministry

On the backdrop of the difficult economic situation, political struggle in that country is running the risk of spilling over into street clashes, says the Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW, May 23. /TASS/. Russia is worried over the dynamics of development in Venezuela and fomenting tensions in that country, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

"On the backdrop of the difficult economic situation, political struggle in that country is running the risk of spilling over into street clashes," the ministry said. "Regrettably, the upsurge of tensions in Venezuela is being instigated from outside. We have to note that unbalanced statements came even from the leaders of the regional organization."

"We are confident that political solution to Venezuelan problems is to be found by the Venezuelan people who have elected its legitimate authorities," the ministry underscored. "This solution should comply with the country’s constitutional norms and the national law. Destructive interference from outside is inadmissible. No one has the right to impose on Venezuela ‘color scenarios’ designed after well-known radical technologies and destabilize the situation."

"We are confident that the main challenge facing Venezuela at the moment is to find realistic ways out of the economic crisis, improve the social situation of broad layers of the population," the commentary said. "It is obvious that this is possible only in conditions of internal political tranquility," it went on. "It is important to cool down emotions. A further unbalancing of the situation in Venezuela is fraught with serious consequences, inducing for the region on the whole."

Russia, according to the foreign ministry, welcomes efforts by a number of politicians to contribute in search for understanding among different political forces in Venezuela. "We hope these moves will have a positive result in the long run. We are ready to join them if it will be seen as necessary," the ministry said.

"It is worth stressing that Venezuela is out long-time partner in politics and in the economy," the ministry noted. "We have a lot of good friends there who, by the way, represent various political forces. We hope the comprehensive Russian-Venezuelan cooperation will further strengthen. We are confident that such cooperation is in mutual interests and meets the tasks of socio-economic development of both countries.".
