Putin to meet with Qatari foreign minister in Sochi to discuss Syria

According to the Kremlin spokesman, the emir of Qatar asked Putin to receive the foreign minister who is going to discuss new Qatari ideas and considerations in the context of the Syrian settlement

SOCHI, May 6. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin will receive in Sochi on Friday Qatar’s Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani who will present his country’s proposals on resolving the Syrian crisis, Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov has told reporters.

He noted that, as a rule, the head of the Russian state does not meet with other countries’ foreign ministers, but in this case "a special agreement was reached, as during the April 19 telephone conversation the emir of Qatar asked the president to receive the foreign minister who is going to discuss with our president new Qatari ideas and considerations in the context of the Syrian settlement."

"[During the conversation with Putin] the minister will express, on behalf of the emir of Qatar, some considerations, which we will be glad to hear and take into account," Ushakov said.

Earlier, during the talks with Russia’s top diplomat Sergey Lavrov in Sochi which lasted about 2.5 hours Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani pointed to the importance of Russia’s role in maintaining the political settlement process in Syria.

The Kremlin press service reported on April 19 that during the telephone conversation with Emir of Qatar Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani held on the initiative of the Qatari side various aspects of the situation in Syria were discussed among other issues, including in the context of the possible coordination of efforts aimed at resolving the crisis in this country.
