Russia FM sees attempts to use ecological problems in Arctic for political aims

Russia stands for expanding environmental cooperation in Arctic regions, including in such issues as oil contamination of sea waters as a result of oil and gas activities and navigation

MOSCOW, April 27. /TASS/. Some try to use the ecological situation in the Arctic as a factor for promoting their political interests, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday.

"It is no accident that ecological problems in the Arctic are in focus of international attention, there are many of those who want to use ecological factor, ecological concerns in political interests," Lavrov said.

"We stand for expanding environmental cooperation in Arctic regions, including in such issues as oil contamination of sea waters as a result of oil and gas activities and navigation, while maintaining the leading role of polar states," he noted.
