MOSCOW, April 12. /TASS/. Syrian President Bashar Assad thinks that federalization will destroy Syria, Russian State Duma deputy Alexander Yuschenko told reporters on Tuesday after this meeting with the Syrian leader.

"The fight for Syria’s future is ongoing in Geneva today. Today you can ask any Syrian and he will tell you that federalization will not contribute to the country’s unity," Yuschenko quoted Assad as saying.

Yuschenko noted that he asked Assad a question about the prospects of political settlement in Syria and effective governing.

The deputy said that Assad answered: "You see a great number of banners in Syria and Damascus today. This is evidence that Syrian people are active in forming the future of the country."

The election to the People’s Council of Syria is scheduled for April 13. It will take place on the multi-party basis in accordance with the constitution adopted at the referendum on 26 February 2012.
