MOSCOW, February 26. /TASS/. The reason for the anti-Russian attacks of the CIA and the Pentagon is the discussion of the military budget for the next year in the US Congress, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov said on Friday.
"The loud statements of US security officials who have seen in Russia the main threat to US national security have not come unexpected to us. Such wave of criticism rises every year at one and the same time. The reason is simple - the discussion by the Congress the size of the military budget for the next year," Konashenkov said.
"We should take it easy. It is important to remember that the ‘Russian threat’ since the middle of the past century has been the Pentagon’s ‘top seller’ threat not only to the US Congress, but also to the NATO partners. So what would they do without us?" he said.
Speaking before the House Armed Services Committee on February 25, Air Force Gen. Philip M. Breedlove, the Supreme Allied Commander, Europe, and commander of US European Command said, in particular, that Russia has "chosen to be an adversary and poses a long-term existential threat" to the United States and US allies and partners in Europe. Russia wants to "rewrite" the agreed rules of the international order, he told lawmakers. "To counter Russia, Eucom, working with allies and partners, is deterring Russia now and preparing to fight and win if necessary," he said.
Russia is eager to exert unquestioned influence over its neighboring states to create a buffer zone, Breedlove said, adding, "Russia is extending its course of influence yet further afield to try to reestablish a leading role on the world stage."
