MOSCOW, February 10. /TASS/. The United States will provoke an uncontrolled arms race, if it tries to deploy weapons in space, Director of the Russian Foreign Ministry’s Non-Proliferation and Arms Control Department Mikhail Ulyanov told a news conference on Wednesday.
"The United States expresses certain comments that the Russian-Chinese suggestions on refraining from being the first to deploy weapons into outer space do not stipulate verification measures. This is trickery," the diplomat said. "If the United States believes that verification is necessary, what prevents it from filling this gap?"
"When such opportunities arise, the United States will not stop at nothing to deploy weapons in space. This will be something similar to the missile defense system in terms of its effects," he said. "This will be something that will change the rules of the game. This will open Pandora’s box, and other countries that have such capabilities will follow the same path. We will have an uncontrolled arms race.".
