Russian lawmaker hopes for restoration of Russia-Canada inter-parliamentary dialogue

After meeting the Canadian deputies, Konstantin Kosachev said that certain signs that the dialogue could resume appeared

MOSCOW, January 18 /TASS/. Konstantin Kosachev, the head of the Federation Council Committee for International Affairs, told TASS on Monday after a meeting with the speakers of both chambers of the Canadian parliament that Russia and Canada could restore inter-parliamentary relations in future.

"The very fact of the meeting is encouraging though no concrete agreements have been reached," Kosachev said by telephone from Vancouver. He added that such agreements should be reached at the level of parliamentary leaders.

"Canada’s reaction to the events in Ukraine in February last year was rather tough. This country has been one of the most active in pursuing the anti-Russian sanctions. The inter-parliamentary ties between the two countries have been frozen over the past few months," Kosachev clarified.

After meeting the Canadian deputies, Kosachev said that certain signs that the dialogue could resume appeared. "Though my optimism is cautious," he added.

The Kosachev-led Russian parliamentary delegation arrived in Canadian Vancouver the day before to attend the 24th session of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum that opened on Monday.
