Putin praises Russian pilots’ actions in Syria

The Russian president said the operation would have been impossible without Iran's support

TEHRAN, November 24 /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised the actions of Russian war pilots in Syria.

"I assess the actions of our pilots in Syria as positive," Putin told journalists after negotiations with his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani on Monday.

"I informed my Iranian friends on these issues today. We exchanged views on the situation in Syria," Putin said adding Russia’s military operation in Syria would have been impossible without Iran’s support.

"As far as the actions of our pilots are concerned, it is a complicated operation in which a huge space grouping and various aviation forces are being involved: attack aircraft, bombers, strategic missile bombers and fighter jets that ensure the cover; two naval groups in the Caspian and Mediterranean Seas that include attack missile carrying ships, which deliver strikes from the Caspian Sea," the Russian leader explained.

Long-term solution to Syrian problem

The president also noteed that Syria’s problems can be solved in the long-term perspective only through political talks.

"There is no other way to find a long-term solution to the Syrian problem than by means of political negotiations," Putin said after talks with his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rouhani.

Putin noted that Russia’s anti-terrorist operation in Syria "is bringing about a positive result." "We [with the Iranian partners] assess it in positive terms," he said.

However, in his words, the Syrian conflict could be ultimately settled only through political negotiations.
