Lavrov and Steinmeier discuss settlement in Syria in telephone conversation

In a phone conversation, the top diplomats discussed the situation in the Middle East including separate aspects of efforts on contributing to the settlement of the situation in Syria

MOSCOW, October 19. /TASS/. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier have discussed the settlement of the situation in Syria in a telephone conversation on Monday.

"The ministers discussed the situation in the Middle East, where the German minister is currently with a visit, including separate aspects of efforts on contributing to the settlement of the situation in Syria," the Russian Foreign Ministry said adding that the conversation was held on Steinmeier’s initiative.

German Foreign Minister Steinmeier is currently on a tour in the Middle East. On October 17-18, he met with Iranian officials in Tehran and discussed different aspects of implementing the agreement on Iranian nuclear program and the situation in Syria.

On October 18, Steinmeir arrived to Saudi Arabia, where he continued to discuss the ways to settle the Syrian crisis. The German foreign minister’s Middle Eastern tour will finish today in Jordan, where the officials will discuss Syria and different aspects of international cooperation in the Mediterranean Sea.
