Russian ambassador to China: SCO’s immediate task is to focus on practical work

BEIJING, September 25. /TASS/. Russia is satisfied with the results of its presidency in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Russia’s Ambassador to China Andrei Denisov said on Friday.

"Obviously, it would be wrong to say that a presiding country is completely satisfied with its activities, since it would mean that everything has been accomplished and there is nothing to be striving for," he said at a regular meeting of the SCO Press Club. "Many decisions did not come easy because any consensus, any balanced and coordinated decision in an international organization is a hard, long and thankless job."

He praised the important role of the SCO Secretariat and Secretary General Dmitry Mezentsev. Handing over presidency to Uzbekistan Russia, like other members of the organization, "is interested in ensuring that further work had practical orientation, and orientation towards the practical result," he said.

"The ceiling of political decisions if not reached in the SCO but we are close to that. So, now we must focus on practical work. And it is clear for us judging by our presidency," the Russian diplomat said.

"A new period in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization has begun after the Ufa [summit] decision to expand," Denisov said. "The SCO working languages are now to be supplemented by English."

The SCO summit in Russia’s Ufa launched a procedure of admission new members - India and Pakistan.
