MOSCOW, April 20. /TASS/. The statement by US Special Representative for Ukraine Negotiations Kurt Volker that the United States is in Ukraine "for the long haul" means that the country is doomed to be a "territory under external governance" for a long time, a senior Russian lawmaker said on Saturday.
"Volker promised that the United States will stay in Ukraine ‘for the long haul.’ It means that Ukraine will for the long haul remain a territory under external governance torn apart by civil strife where such notions as civil peace and accord are unattainable," Leonid Slutsky, chairman of the international committee at the Russian State Duma lower parliament house, wrote on his Telegram account.
"American string pullers," in his words, don’t want peace in Ukraine. "They will go on pushing Kiev to continue the conflict in southeastern regions to nurse tensions near the Russian borders," he noted.
"It means that the new Ukrainian president, whoever wins the election tomorrow, will never be an independent politician," he stressed. "Ukrainians will have elections without choice. Their country will again be ruled by the Washington cartel, with its real goals being a far cry from those it declares (prosperity and wellbeing of the Ukrainian people). Alas, Ukraine will only be a pawn on a "big chessboard" where the United States is struggling for global domination," he added.
Volker tweeted on Friday that the United States was in Ukraine "for the long haul" seeking to "support a peaceful, strong, democratic, prosperous, secure, Ukraine that sees its borders and territories, including Crimea, fully restored.".
