Putin to make decision on fake news law when it is submitted for signature

The bill expands the list of information access to which may be restricted at the request of Russia’s Prosecutor-General or his deputies

MOSCOW, March 15. /TASS/. Russian President Vladimir Putin will make a decision regarding the fake news law when the document is submitted to him for signature, presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told the media on Friday.

"The bill will be submitted to the president. Then he will make a decision," Peskov said.

Asked if it was legal to block such content before court rulings Peskov said that such a measure would require a prosecutor’s decision, adding that the proposed procedure had been studied by experts and that its counterparts existed in the legislation of other countries.

The bill approved by the upper house of parliament expands the list of information access to which may be restricted at the request of Russia’s Prosecutor-General or his deputies. A ban may be imposed on using information and telecommunication networks to spread fake socially significant content disguised as true reports that may cause harm to people’s life and/or health or property or create a risk of violations of public order or public security, and hindrances to the operation of life support, transport or social infrastructures, banks, power supply facilities, industries and communication.
