Kremlin welcomes Tokyo's consideration of making Japan visa-free for Russians

Multiple visa-free entries to Japan for a certain period are also up for discussion

SOCHI, February 15. /TASS/. Moscow has hailed the deliberations in Tokyo for possibly ending the visa system for Russians travelling to Japan, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday.

"Such discussions are undoubtedly welcomed and this fits into the general course towards further developing [bilateral] relations," the Kremlin spokesman said.

This issue was not discussed at the latest talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the spokesman noted.

Generally, the issues of easing the visa system are frequently on the agenda of talks with various states, Peskov noted.

"This is what we are aspiring for ultimately," he emphasized.

The Japanese newspaper Sankei earlier reported that Tokyo was looking into actually cancelling short-term entry visas for Russians, which means that they would be able to enter Japan visa-free for 90 days, if they register the data of their overseas passports in any Japanese consulate in advance, the newspaper writes.

Multiple visa-free entries to Japan for a certain period are also up for discussion.

No deadline for introducing this system has been set so far. This issue might be discussed between the Russian and Japanese foreign ministers, at the upcoming Munich Security Conference set for February 16, the newspaper writes.
