Russian envoy accuses US of trying to destroy OPCW

"They don’t care whether this organization will continue existing or not," Alexander Shulgin said

THE HAGUE, November 19./TASS/. The United States is trying to destroy the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), Russia’s permanent representative to the organization, Alexander Shulgin, said on the sidelines of the 23rd Conference to the States Parties to the Chemical Weapons Convention.

"We are seeing continuation of a confrontational course on the part of our American partners," Shulgin said, drawing attention to the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement (on climate change) and the nuclear deal on Iran. "Now, calling things as they are, they are trying to derail the OPCW," the diplomat stated.

"They don’t care whether this organization will continue existing or not, they need to settle their up-to-the-moment task," he added.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump announced Washington’s withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. Last year, Trump pulled out from the Paris Agreement.
