Russia condemns nationalist ideas being used in European Parliament electoral battle

Аpparent strive to use such artificial ideological constructions to the populist benefit seems completely dodgy, Russia’s Foreign Ministry added

MOSCOW, November 17. /TASS/. Russia’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the use of nationalist ideas in the electoral battle prior to the European Parliament election in 2019, the ministry said in a statement released on its website on Saturday.

"And an apparent strive to use such artificial ideological constructions to the populist benefit of the ongoing battle for the votes prior to the upcoming European Parliament election in May 2019 seems completely dodgy to us," the statement said.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry believes that nationalist forces opposing the EU’s further federalization may earn more mandates at the election according to exit polls than earlier.

The festive events dedicated to the World War 1 Armistice resulted in a situation where certain European countries are trying to "draw doubtful parallels" between the current situation on the continent and the periods preceding both world conflicts, the ministry said.

On November 11, festive events on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the end of World War 1, were held in Paris. Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, as well as leaders of other countries that participated in World War 1 and heads of international organizations attended ceremonies at the invitation of French President Emmanuel Macron.
