Professional dialogue on prevention of deployment of arms in space is crucial, says Lavrov

The top diplomat said the topic of the risk of outer space being turned into a scene of military confrontation "is getting increasingly alarming"

MOSCOW, November 2. /TASS/. Moscow believes there is an urgent need for starting a professional dialogue on ways of preventing the deployment of weapons in space, because the situation may go out of control, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a news conference following talks with OSCE Secretary-General Thomas Greminger in Moscow on Friday.

Russia finds extremely worrisome the real risk of outer space being turned into a scene of military confrontation.

"This theme is getting increasingly alarming," Lavrov said in reply to a question from TASS. "Otherwise the situation may go out of control. Should this happen, some experts warn, one may forget about stability and security."

Moscow has more than once pointed to the risk of an arms race in space and proposed a number of initiatives for its prevention. At the 73rd UN General Assembly session Russia proposed three resolutions for preventing conflicts in outer space.
