Russian diplomat comments on situation on Korean peninsula

The negotiation process launched on the Korean Peninsula gives a real chance to settle the situation in the region, says the Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman

SVETLOGORSK /Kaliningrad Region/, August 15. /TASS/. Russia hopes that the positive tendencies, which have appeared recently in the negotiating process on regulating the situation on the Korean peninsula, will remain, Russian Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated on Wednesday.

"We assume that these negotiations will be based on mutual respect, and that the positive tendency that has existed for the last several months will not go away," the diplomat noted. "We hope that the parties will be able to move forward, and there will be no backtracking."

The negotiation process launched on the Korean Peninsula gives a real chance to settle the situation in the region, she said.

According to the diplomat, problems in the region began because of some Western countries, which "decided to put things right in their own characteristic manner." "However, instead of this order, we have seen the deteriorating situation over the past few decades," she noted. "Now there is a real chance of its settlement through negotiations launched on the basis of the platform proposed by Russia and China.".
