Georgia’s accession to NATO to pose threat to Russian world, says ambassador

Znaur Gassiyev said "NATO’s expansion is tantamount to countering the Russian world, and South Ossetia is part of that world"

MOSCOW, August 9. /TASS/. Georgia’s potential accession to NATO poses a threat to the Russian world, with South Ossetia being part of it, South Ossetian Ambassador to Russia Znaur Gassiyev told TASS.

"I cannot analyze what specific consequences that (Georgia’s possible accession to NATO - TASS) can result in, since I do not have such political farsightedness," he said. "I am perfectly aware though that NATO’s expansion is tantamount to countering the Russian world, and South Ossetia is part of that world."

"That’s why I cannot consider it to be a positive thing," the ambassador added.

On July 12, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg once again reaffirmed the alliance’s intention to make Georgia its member without specifying when exactly this could happen.
