State Duma speaker vows anti-sanctions legislation will be ‘effective enough’

Russian lawmakers give high priority to initiatives aimed at protecting Russia’s interests "from the sanctions policy of the US and those states that support its initiatives," the Duma speaker says

MOSCOW, May 15. /TASS/. State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin believes that the laws on countersanctions and imposing criminal liability for complying with Western restrictions on Russian soil will be sufficiently effective. The lower chamber is studying the drafts of these documents at the first reading on Tuesday.

"We believe that they will be effective enough and will enable the president and the Russian government to take measures to overcome the US sanctions," he told reporters on Tuesday.

Russian lawmakers give high priority to initiatives aimed at protecting Russia’s interests "from the sanctions policy of the US and those states that support its initiatives," Volodin specified.

"The US sanctions are thoroughly inimical. They affected more than 400 legal entities and about 200 citizens of our country. We will do everything that is possible to protect the interests of our state and security, as well as guarantee the rights and freedoms of our citizens. These laws were designed to address these tasks," the speaker added.

He pointed to the need to adopt new legislative acts to continue Russia’s development while countering the West’s sanctions system. "We are granting far-reaching powers to our president and the Russian government, so that our country, our economy and our jobs are protected," Volodin stressed.
