Changes in UNSC should be decided by permanent members, Kremlin spokesman says

According to the UN secretary general, the veto is used "too often"

MOSCOW, April 23. /TASS/. Any changes in the makeup of the UN Security Council should be decided by consensus among its permanent members, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"The United Nations Security Council is the main international body that has the power to consider key global security issues, it is the only international body of this kind," he said. "There is no alternative to the UN Security Council. Any decisions concerning changes in the Council’s makeup and its reform should be made by consensus among Council member states," the Kremlin spokesman pointed out.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said earlier in an interview with Sweden’s national public TV broadcaster SVT that the difficulties the UN Security Council had been facing, which particularly concerned the Syria issue, stemmed from its structural problems since the Council represented the world as it had been after World War II and not the world of today.

According to the UN secretary general, the veto is used too often. Guterres pointed to the ongoing discussion on ways to adjust the UN Security Council to the current global situation. He was confident that it would be impossible to fully reform the UN without reforming the Security Council.
