Top Russian, NATO military officials to discuss Syria

The parties will discuss issues concerning the military activities of NATO and Russia in the European region, as well as the situation in Syria

BAKU, April 19. /TASS/. Russian General Staff Chief General Valery Gerasimov has arrived on a working visit to Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku, where he particularly plans to discuss the Syria issue with NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander in Europe General Curtis Scaparrotti, the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

"The parties will discuss issues concerning the military activities of NATO and Russia in the European region, as well as the situation in Syria," the statement reads.

The Russian Defense Ministry added that while on a visit to Baku, Gerasimov would be received by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller said earlier in an interview with Russia’s Kommersant daily that a meeting between Scaparrotti and Gerasimov was planned to be held this week. Meanwhile, a diplomatic source in Brussels told TASS that the talks would focus on ways to prevent military incidents caused by a possible misunderstanding between Russia and NATO.
