Russia creates major precision positioning station network

In particular, the network includes 48 corrective stations in the Leningrad region and the Republic of Bashkortostan, created for the ERA-GLONASS vehicle emergency call system pilot project

MOSCOW, June 18. /TASS/. The NP GLONASS non-commercial navigation technology partnership and NPK Industrial Geodetic Systems (IGS) research and production company have united their high-precision positioning stations in a single network, which has become the largest in Russia. It will be used also for the ERA-GLONASS system, the press service of NP GLONASS told TASS on Thursday.

The stations’ merger has taken place as part of a cooperation agreement between NP GLONASS and NPK IGS. In particular, the network includes 48 corrective stations in the Leningrad region and the Republic of Bashkortostan, created for the ERA-GLONASS vehicle emergency call system pilot project.

"After the merger, the joint network comprised 195 stations thus becoming the largest in Russia. By the end of this year, the number of stations is planned to be increased to 500," the press service said.

The company said that updating information from the stations will be used in the ERA-GLONASS project, including for ascertaining road accident circumstances, which is necessary for getting car insurance cover services according to the European Accident Statement.

The joint project of NP GLONASS and NPK IGS is aimed at creating the ground-based high-precision positioning infrastructure with the maximum coverage across Russia and provide comfortable access to data for end users.

The parties plan to further develop the network by attracting to the project the stations’ owners, which include both government agencies and private companies.

The NP GLONASS partnership was established on May 25, 2012. It is aimed at supporting the development of a competitive navigation information services sector in Russia.
