Increased volcanic activity registered on Japan’s Kichinoerabu Island

TOKYO, June 18. /TASS/. Increased volcanic activity has been reported from Japan’s sparsely populated Island of Kuchinoerabu in the Kagoshima Prefecture, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said on Thursday.

According to the agency, the Kuchinoerabu has presumably exploded. Several volcanic earthquakes have been registered. No further details are available due to the bad weather in Japan’s southern areas.

On May 29, The Kuchinoerabu volcano spewed several plumes of ash to a height of nine kilometres. All of the island’s 137 residents were evacuated to the nearby Yakushima Island.
