MOSCOW, June 4. /TASS/. Oscar-winning Russian film director Nikita Mikhalkov announced plans on Thursday to make a Russian-American movie starring Hollywood actor Steven Seagal.

Mikhalkov, whose 1994 movie Burnt by the Sun won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, told TASS he had discussed the new project with Seagal at his Moscow studio.

"He brought the project and we discussed plans for our joint work," he said, adding that he had made acquaintance with Seagal some years ago.

"I told him then that if he wanted any inner movement he should turn away from the genre that had made him successful," said Mikhalkov, who heads the Union of Russian Filmmakers, adding that Seagal had potential that "had never been used in his previous roles".

Mikhalkov said the new joint production would be "both useful and extravagant experience".

Seagal, also a producer, screenwriter, film director, martial artist and musician, is best known for his films Under Siege, Above the Law, On Deadly Ground and The Patriot.
