CANNES, May 18. /TASS/. American-Spanish Rebel Movies and Russia's Manifest Film Company signed on Monday at Cannes Film Festival an agreement for joint production of horror movies.

Work on the first project, The Malevolent, starring Mischa Barton, will start in the US in August-September 2015, an official representing Russia's film industry told TASS at the French gathering.

Russia is considered a pioneer of horror movies. The first silent horror film, Viy, based on 19th century writer Nikolai Gogol's story, was released in Russia in 1909.
