BUENOS AIRES, October 17. /TASS/. Argentina successfully launched its first geostationary communications satellite ARSAT-1 from the spaceport near Kourou in French Guiana on Thursday.

The satellite will be used for telecommunications services, including satellite television, the Internet, data transmission and telephone communication in the territories of Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay. Its term is estimated at 15 years.

Argentina is the first Latin American country having in the orbit its own geostationary satellite. The project’s cost was about $270 million.
