LONDON, October 14. /TASS/. The name of the winner of the prestigious Booker prize in literature awarded for the best novel in English will be announced in London. The most likely winner is the Indian-born Briton, Neel Mukherjee. He is the favorite among six authors of novels on a “shortlist” for the Booker prize.
The bookmakers have made heavy bids, counting on Neel Mukherjee as the favorite. Critics of leading British newspapers also named him as the most likely winner of the Booker prize this year.
The "shortlist" of the hopefuls for the Booker Prize includes three novels by British writers, two by American writers and a novel by a writer from Australia.
Earlier, the Booker Prize could be awarded only to authors-native English speakers from Great Britain, Ireland and countries of the Commonwealth. This year the rules have been changed to allow any author writing in English to contest the prize, which offered a chance to writers from the United States. But, the US authors have a poor chance to win the prize this year, bookmakers said, citing their sources.
The jury, which will award the Booker prize to the best writer, said that the “shortlist” nominated for the prestigious award includes novels devoted to the modern epoch, while earlier, the authors who contested the Booker prize had mostly presented historical novels.
