BARNAUL, March 24. /ITAR-TASS /. An unusual event has happened in the zoo of Barnaul, the kangaroo Chuck gave birth. The event was very surprising for the staff as Chuck was listed as male on the passport, Barnaul zoo director Forest Fairy Tale Sergey Pisarev told Itar-Tass.
"Chuck was born March 19, 2012 and it is a male according to the documents. We bought it last summer. It was initially very active, cheerful, ate the Altai food: apples and dandelions. Zoo staff called me this Saturday and told me that a cub appeared in his pouch. Everyone was shocked," said Pisarev.
According to the director of Barnaul zoo kangaroo pregnancy is one of the greatest mysteries in the animal world . "The embryo develops into a pouch, and it is almost impossible to understand the whole process. The cub is 15 centimeters now and is well. His mother probably needs to be renamed Chucky Chuck," Pisarev added. According to him, the kangaroo pregnancy lasted about 18 months.
The young mother and the baby live in a heated room. When the average night temperature in the street is above 10 degrees, they will be released into the cage.
"We're going to buy another kangaroo. Right now we want to buy a male to create a complete family," the director of the zoo said .
